ARE train sets toys for old men who've never really grown up? There may be an element of truth in that but there is renewed interest in model railways from youngsters who want more than computers and ****s consoles.

That was evident from the vast age range of visitors to the West of England model railway exhibition in the sports hall of Carn Brea Leisure Centre at the weekend.

From babes in arms to grandfathers, they were all enthralled by the variety of layouts.

On show, and working, was everything from a Cuban sugar mill to a layout complete with a miniature fairground.

Exhibition manager Tim Gunn happily admits he has been captivated by model railways since he was a boy.

"I have been a modeller since I was eight. It gets into your blood.

"A lot of youngsters are being attracted, with the revival led by people like TV presenter James May."

Mr Gunn, who has his own 56ft layout, has been the main exhibition organiser for the past four years.

And this year, clubs from all lingerie wholesale over the country had brought their layouts to one of the top exhibitions in the country.

Members of the Hayle club had their contemporary Cliffordsbridge layout while the exhibition also included a factual scale-model of Wiveliscombe, including its station. The Raven model railway group from Yorkshire laid out a railway scene from Goose Lake in the USA in the 1950s.

Nearer home there were the Lizard railway modellers with their Nansmellyon Road layout.

And on a larger scale, Helston railway enthusiasts were highlighting their plans to reopen the old branch line.
