ARE train sets toys for old men who've never really grown up? There may be an element of truth in that but there is renewed interest in model railways from youngsters who want more than computers and ****s consoles.

That was evident from the vast age range of visitors to the West of England model railway exhibition in the sports hall of Carn Brea Leisure Centre at the weekend.

From babes in arms to grandfathers, they were all enthralled by the variety of layouts.

On show, and working, was everything from a Cuban sugar mill to a layout complete with a miniature fairground.

Exhibition manager Tim Gunn happily admits he has been captivated by model railways since he was a boy.

"I have been a modeller since I was eight. It gets into your blood.

"A lot of youngsters are being attracted, with the revival led by people like TV presenter James May."

Mr Gunn, who has his own 56ft layout, has been the main exhibition organiser for the past four years.

And this year, clubs from all lingerie wholesale over the country had brought their layouts to one of the top exhibitions in the country.

Members of the Hayle club had their contemporary Cliffordsbridge layout while the exhibition also included a factual scale-model of Wiveliscombe, including its station. The Raven model railway group from Yorkshire laid out a railway scene from Goose Lake in the USA in the 1950s.

Nearer home there were the Lizard railway modellers with their Nansmellyon Road layout.

And on a larger scale, Helston railway enthusiasts were highlighting their plans to reopen the old branch line.

Vashi-based Modern School has bagged first prize in school category of annual Mayor Bhajan competition organised by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The High Court of Justice on Thursday instructed Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) to explain why he did not accept the recommendations of a committee of experts to examine the issue of separate seating for men and women in public buses.

His predecessor, Shaul Mofaz (Kadima), appointed the panel when he was minister.

Thursday's decision was handed down by Justices Elyakim Rubinstein, Salim Joubran and Yoram Danziger on a petition filed in 2007 by five Orthodox women and the Israel Religious Action Center of the Progressive (Reform) Movement.

"The committee's position was based on a broad foundation and was reasoned and detailed," wrote Rubinstein, the head of the panel. "The minister's position, I fear, is not sufficiently reasoned either legally or factually."

The committee recommended that, unlike today, where the gender- separated buses have signs saying "mehadrin," indicating that haredi leaders expect male and female passengers to sit separately, there should be no signs inside or outside the bus to indicate that fact. The seating must be totally voluntary and the public companies may not intervene to indicate otherwise, the committee wrote.

Although the petition, which was filed in early 2007, was suspended for almost two years while the committee, established on the court's recommendation and appointed by then-minister of transportation Mofaz, studied the matter, Katz rejected its recommendation.

On January 28, he wrote, "The minister believes that the bus companies should be allowed to post signs that provide guidance on how to sit that will include an explanation and a request for the separation of the genders, while at the same time making clear that this is not mandatory."

Katz recommended that the mehadrin buses continue to operate more or less as they Clip on charms have until now, but added that their operation should be supervised to prevent violence of any kind against female passengers who want to sit in the "men's section."

In its show-cause order, the court instructed Katz to explain why he did not want to operate the buses according to the committee's recommendations.

MANAWATU'S performance in completing a clean sweep in the regional intercentre playoffs at the weekend was an effort full of merit.

Hawkes's Bay, Wairarapa and Gisborne-East Coast were the other centres involved, but Manawatu's depth and, perhaps, home advantage were the deciders.

The senior men's and women's teams now go on to the national final, but I have to question the shortsightedness of not having such a progression for the development teams.

A **** that has uncertainty about its future surely cannot afford to ignore its next echelon to the top flight.

"Don't think of your grocery list or things you have to do during the day," she said. "Your whole body should feel relaxed."

"Fifty-ish" Sue Ellen Caplan, a museum docent, said she has been to many different yoga studios, but finds the Chrysler a far superior venue.

"The first class we went into the Islamic Gallery and saw the prayer rug right there - it just takes you to a different dimension," she said. "You can't be in a more peaceful place."

Wood agreed.

BANGKOK, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Security has been beefed up for Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva after two bomb incidents within two days, Thai media reported Monday.

Abhisit changed his official vehicle from a Mercedes Benz to a new bullet-proof Land Rover, the Nation ****** said.

Meanwhile, Anupong Paochinda, Thailand's Army Chief said Monday that the Army is ready to provide bodyguards for Abhisit when it gets request.

THE Attorney General could order a criminal investigation into fresh claims that British secret service agents colluded in torture.

Baroness Scotland is considering the claims of five British men held in Pakistan over the July 2005 suicide bombings in London and other plots, who have complained of being mistreated with the full knowledge of the secret service.

Allegations that they were beaten, whipped and threatened with rape while being unlawfully detained have been brought to light by Tory MP and former SAS soldier David Davis.

Pakistani officials have claimed British officers were 'directly involved' in the torture of the British residents.

The Attorney General is expected to decide this week whether to call in the police to investigate the security services.

One of the cases involves a medical student who has returned to Britain after being held for two months in a room opposite the British High Commission in Karachi. Two British intelligence officers questioned him near the end of his detention, he said.

The man, known only as ZZ, said he had been deprived of sleep, beaten and whipped and is still traumatised.

Four other cases are also being considered by the Attorney General, but all four of the complainants have been accused of terrorism offences.

The claims are a fresh blow for the intelligence services, following a Metropolitan Police investigation into the alleged torture of British resident Binyam Mohamed in Pakistan.

They surfaced in a report by Human Rights Watch, which has investigators in Pakistan.

Former shadow home secretary Mr Davis wrote to Lady Scotland in December, urging her to call a judicial inquiry into the allegations.

He said the current round of court cases would be halted by a judicial inquiry. 'I don't buy this idea that it would be a distraction.

I'd rather have an inquiry done properly and done once,' he said.

A spokesman for the Attorney General said she would respond to Mr Davis's letter this week and added there were 'no plans at present to ask the Metropolitan Police to carry out further investigations'.

1st Ld-Writethru: Two organized crime gang members executed in China

BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Two prime members of an organized crime gang in central China's Hubei Province were executed Wednesday after the Supreme People's Court (SPC) approved their death sentences on Dec. 23 last year.

Liu Lieyong was sentenced to death for the crimes of organizing and leading an organized criminal gang, murder, blackmail, illegal possession of arms and gambling, said a statement from the SPC.

Chen Xiaohui was convicted of participating in an organized criminal gang, murder, intentional injury, inciting disorder and illegal possession of arms.

Both were also permanently deprived of their political rights while Liu was fined 100,000 yuan (14,493 U.S. dollars).

Another 19 people convicted in the case received jail terms from one year with two-year reprieve to suspended death sentences, said the statement.

The crime gang, founded by Liu in the city of Xiantao in Hubei in 2001, had opened ******s, which were illegal in China, illegally forced the transfer of shares in local bus companies and manipulated local cement and food markets.

Liu instructed gang members, including Chen, to murder one person. Chen was also held responsible for another death and nine injuries, the statement said.

Their deeds had seriously damaged public security and economic life, the SPC statement said.

Liu and Chen were sentenced to death by the Shiyan Municipal Intermediate People's Court in February 2008 and the Hubei Provincial High People's Court upheld the sentences at the second trial in March 2009.

China launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on gang crimes in February 2006. Police have investigated over 1,200 gang crime cases and arrested more than 8,900 people from February 2006 to September 2009, said the Ministry of Public Security.

1st Ld-Writethru: Three die fighting forest fires in southwest Kunming province

KUNMING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Three forest workers died while fighting forest fires in southwest China's Yunnan Province Tuesday, the local government said Wednesday.

The three men were among 300 people fighting a forest fire that broke out on Mt. Wugong (Mt. Centipede) in Binchuan County, Dali, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, the county government said in a press release.

The dead were identified as Zhou Yegui, Yang Xuelei and Dongxingwei, all natives of Binchuan County. They died at 5:20 p.m. while protecting other fire fighters from being injured.

The fire, which engulfed 50 hectares of forest amid high winds, was extinguished at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The local government said no rain had fallen in Binchuan county since November and the woods were prone to fire.

Another forest fire broke out at 3 p.m. Sunday on Mt. Cangshan, a major tourist attraction in Yangbi County, Dali. The fire was partially contained as of Tuesday.

The fire prompted the evacuation of more than 2,000 visitors and local residents, but no casualties were reported. Part of the mountain area reopened to visitors Wednesday.

Fire control authorities in Yunnan said 84 forest fires had been reported in the province since November, up 611 percent from the same period in the previous year.

Yunnan is suffering from the worst drought in 60 years, and windy weather has allowed forest fires to spread quickly, according to the province's forestry department.

THE question this week: Is it permissible for grown men to cry in public? And if it is, is it permissible to laugh at them once they start? It sounds harsh, I know. But we have had more blubbering blokes recently than at any time since Kylie Minouge confirmed she would not be posing for Playboy, after all.

Now, I'm not one to come down hard on the male of the species expressing his emotions.

Break a leg and it is fine to stroke one's chin pensively. Miss last orders at a bar and feel free to compose a sonnet of remorse.

But please, can we call a halt to the current orgy of lachrymosity, which is starting to make Tiny Tears look like Steven Seagal? First off we have Prime Minister Gordon Brown blubbering away in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Now I accept having to talk to an idiot like Morgan would be enough to upset anyone, but we are talking about the leader of the nation here.

Yes, there were personal reasons for the tears; but Brown should really be able to control such things in public. Blimey, no wonder we don't have an Empire any more.

At best Brown looked silly. At worst it made you imagine some cynical ploy by his spin doctors to try to get us to vote for his lame-duck Labour Party.

While the first morning of a Test match can prompt some men to actually want to put up that shelf they've been putting up off attacking for six months.
